This July 4th, we celebrate the liberties and freedoms that were celebrated in our Declaration of Independence that separated us from tyranny rule across Europe.

Prominent in the establishment of America’s colonization was an English minister, Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616), who advocated for America to be a safe haven for those persecuted for their faith. His vision for America to be a place of religious refuge impacted many who fled to escape brutal treatment from the English State Church. Religious persecution was taking place in Portugal, England, Germany, France, and Austria. Groups of Jews, Quakers, Mennonites, and Bible-believing Christians sought refuge in the New World.

Hakluyt helped to establish the first group of English settlers in America with the Virginia Colony, that was founded, among other reasons, to propagate the “Christian religion to such people as yet live in darkness and miserable ignorance of the true knowledge and worship of God.” 1

Landing on the shores of our nation in 1607, a group of 149 men took pause to worship and give thanks to God. A wooden cross was erected at Cape Henry (where a memorial remains to this day) and they were led in prayer by the Reverend Robert Hunt, committing themselves to God’s plan and purpose for the New World:

We do hereby dedicate this Land, and ourselves, to reach the People within these shores with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to raise up Godly generations after us, and with these generations take the Kingdom of God to all the earth. May this Covenant of Dedication remain to all generations, as long as this earth remains, and may this Land, along with England, be Evangelists to the World. May all who see this Cross, remember what we have done here, and may those who come here to inhabit, join us in this Covenant and in this most noble work that the Holy Scriptures may be fulfilled.” 2

This prayer marks a covenant made with God for our nation, and the signers of the Declaration of Independence confirmed this. Independent member states voluntarily joined together under a covenantal framework of Government as “One Nation Under God.”

The liberties we have enjoyed (or taken for granted) are compromised today by the very Government established to secure these fundamental rights. We need to return to the origin of our roots and the faith that birthed our free nation. God waits patiently for our return to our covenant agreement.

Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty. 3

My prayer for all of us today is that our hearts will turn to the foundations on which our nation was birthed, and may we experience the truth of our decree for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

God bless the USA!

Yours Truly,

Dr. Pamela
